Sufism On Our Doorstep

By Calgaryislam.com Editorial Staff

All praise is for Allaah alone, the Lord of the worlds and may He send praises and blessings of peace upon the Messenger of Allaah ( صلى الله عليه وسلم ), and upon his family and true followers, and his Companions and those who follow his way.

Bidaah / Refutations

Allaah Subhanahu Wa Ta ‘Ala says:

Indeed in the Messenger of Allâh (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم ) you have a good example to follow for him who hopes in (the Meeting with) Allâh and the Last Day and remembers Allâh much. (Al-Ahzab 33:21)

And:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ أَطِيعُواْ اللّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَلاَ تَوَلَّوْا عَنْهُ وَأَنتُمْ تَسْمَعُونَ

O you who believe! Obey Allâh and His Messenger, and turn not away from him (i.e. Messenger Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) while you are hearing. (Al-Anfal 8:20)

The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم ) said, "I have left behind me two things, if you cling to them you will never go astray. They are the Book of Allah and my Sunnah."

And he (صلى الله عليه وسلم ) also said, "..and you will live to see great difference, so cling to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs after me, even if it be with your molars." (Sahih Al Bukhari)

Canada has no doubt become a fresh breeding ground for Ahlul Bidaah as they continue to invite the Muslims to the deception and corruption of Sufism. The attack against Ahlus-Sunnah and Tawheed under the banner of Tassawuf preys among those who are weak in knowledge. The people of innovation are increasing in numbers especially among the reverts in Canada. Here they have found a place where they can spread their deviancies to the unsuspecting mass of people. Their flag bearers, the likes of Hamza Yusuf, Zayed Shaakir, Nuh Ha Meem Keller, Abu Hakeem Murad, and those in their ranks, summon the people to their misguidance and ignorance.

The invitation to Sufism is a call to abandon the fundamental principals of Tawheed to the worship of saints and graves. It is the invitation to Shirk and to wage war against the Sunnah and its’ people while claiming to be calling to the correct methodology. An example of such shirk can be found in man called Ahmad Zarruq whom Hamza Yusuf quotes often in his speech given at Stanford University on May 4th, 1997 entitled, “Tasawwuf/Sufism in Islam”.

In the book "The Dispraise of Al-Hawaa" By Imaam Ibnul Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah, the following is stated:

One of the men who, "Dedicated himself to Sufism, withdrew from the world and took a wandering life" is Ahmad Zarruq.258 Nuh Ha Mim described him as, "One of the most renowned sheiks of the Shaathili tariqa."259 Zarruq's writing according to Keller, "Attest to their author's illumination in the spiritual way."

Ahmad Zarruq described himself in his poem, Al-Manthoomah 'Ala Safeenat An-Najaat, as someone who has been given the "possession of the entire East and West", running the affairs, "giving and taking souls," "bringing life to the dead hearts," and more! After such description, he "offers" his help, saying:

And in case you are in a state of distress, depression and adversity, Then call [saying]

"O Zarruq", and I will come in haste.260

Is this illumination or the darkness of Shirk! 261

Verily, those whom you call upon besides Allâh are slaves like you. So call upon them and let them answer you if you are truthful. (Al-A'raf 7:194)

Ahmad Zarruq wants people to turn to him!

Nuh Ha Mim Keller quoted Ahmad Zarruq's saying that Imaam Maalik said: "He who practices Sufism without learning Sacred Law corrupts his faith, while he who learns Sacred Law without practicing Sufism corrupts himself. only he who combines the two Droves true." 262

Attributing the above saying to Imaam Maalik is as corrupt as the Sufi concepts. This is evident in the narration by 'Abdullaah Bin Yoosuf At-Tanneesee 263 who spoke about a man from the city of Nasiyeebeen 264 who came to Imaam Maalik and told him about "some people who are called As-Sufiyyah " in the city who "when they finish eating, they start reciting poetry and dancing."265

Maalik exclaimed: "Are they insane?" 266 The man responded: "No." Maalik exclaimed: "Are they boys?" The man replied: "No. They are old and intelligent men." Maalik said: "We didn't hear that anyone from the people of Islaam did like this [what the Sufis did]..." 267

266 Imaam Maalik didn't know what we know now from the book of Nuh Ha Meem that the way of the Sufi disciple starts with madness!267 Reported by Al-Qaadi 'lyaad in Tarleeb Al-Madaarikwa Taqreeb Al-Masaalik. by Al-Qaadi Abul Fadhl 'lyaad (d.544/1149), checked by Dr. Ahmad Bakee Mahmood, 2:54. "Sufism is a shameful deception which begins with Dhikr and ends with Kufr. Its outward manifestation appears to be piety, but its inward reality forsakes the Commandments of Allah." [Illat-Tasawwuf Yaa Ibadallah].

The Sufis in Canada have become very bold in attempting to justify and defend their deviant beliefs. They have even gone so far as to twist the words of Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah to convince people of their methodologies. ( See "ASFA Lies on Shaykhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah" ) The reality of the position of Ibn Taymiyyah with regards to Sufism can be sampled by the following in which he spoke of the false miracles claimed by many Sufi leaders, Ibn Taymiyyah said:

"It may also be done with the help of their devils as they are a people who are as closely attended by devils as they are by their own brothers... These people who experience these satanic happenings are under a great delusion, in their foolishness they are deprived of all blessings, they only increase that which is feared, they devour the wealth of the people in futile acts, they do not order the good, nor do they forbid evil, and they do not fight Jihaad in Allah's Cause." [Al-Fataawaa].

In short, the great fitnah of Sufism has carefully been cultivated and embedded deep within the fine fabric of the minds of unsuspecting Muslims. The great deception of our time that threatens to destroy and hamper the growth of pure Islaam in Canada and the United States.

Imaam Muhammad Ibn Sireen said, " Verily, this knowledge is religion. So look into (ie. Investigate) whom you take your religion from."

May Allaah protect us from Shaitan and from those who have deviated from Islaam and may He grant us success and continue to strengthen and use the Ulema as the means of spreading tawheed throughout the earth and make them the means of destroying Shirk and Bidaah. Ameen.
